Things I wish I’d known when I started teaching yoga

I regret nothing! But. As a new yoga teacher the choices I made could’ve been easier if I hadn’t struggled with comparison and taken failures and no shows so personally.

I’m sharing the wisdom that built my trust muscle, helped me become more the CEO doing what I loved rather than people pleasing and burning out.

Stop trying to teach everyone. Trying to please everyone in my classes made me scattered. When you’re confused so are people in your class.

Having packages with expiry dates allows you to know what’s in your pot. Running pay as you go classes is no system at all. It creates insecurity not knowing who to expect, how much you’ll earn . When I look back at myself 20 years ago this was a huge piece making me feel not good enough. I was scared to introduce advance payment for a course/block of sessions but actually, students welcomed honing their new healthy habits.

There’s A LOT of admin in between teaching Responding to emails, paying bills, marketing is part of your working day too.

Teaching people is NOT about making people like you As a facilitator you share your insights and studies. Some people won’t get it but lots of people will! (especially when you clarify who you love to teach)

Have patience It takes time to get established. Even if you have a solid attract and nurture system for wooing students it can take several months (in my experience 6 - 8 months to start building your community from scratch.

Embrace your flaws Yoga teachers are humans too. No need to be perfect or do the most advanced poses.

Find your mentors and cheerleaders Find a place where you can go for advice and celebrate your wins with other teachers. Some Facebook groups can be intimidating and noisy with conflicting advice so choose a space that welcomes you.
